simply asking "what do you see?" can elicit surprisingly insightful responses.

this is a collection of some of these insights that i've encountered while teaching at an art museum and in the community.

newer entries come from a new program called "the art of looking," that brings mobile art galleries to disabled adults and children.

just a reminder, the entries do not reflect personal commentary on art pieces or collections.

high school students

"what do you see?"

student 1: "some lady in the middle being lifted out of a box."

student 2: "it's a casket, stupid!"

"okay, well what do you see that makes you say it's a casket?"

student 2: "because it's human size."

"good observation. so what about the women on the sides? what does their expression tell us?"

student 1: "they be lookin' at the lady in the middle, like 'oooh, why she bein' resurrected?' they be hatin, with they stank faces.'"
